A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that occurs in any part of the urinary tract, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. UTIs are quite common and can affect people of all ages, although they are more prevalent in women than in men.
UTI Causes
UTIs are commonly caused by bacteria, most often Escherichia coli (E. coli), which is normally found in the gastrointestinal tract. Risk factors for developing UTIs include being female, sexual activity, having a urinary catheter, certain birth control methods (like diaphragms), urinary tract abnormalities, suppressed immune system, and conditions that obstruct the flow of urine. Diagnosis usually involves a urinalysis to detect the presence of white blood cells, red blood cells, or bacteria in the urine.
UTI Symptoms
Urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms can vary depending on which part of the urinary tract is affected (lower tract - bladder, or upper tract - kidneys). Here are the common symptoms associated with UTIs:
Lower UTI Symptoms (Cystitis):
- Strong, persistent urge to urinate
- Burning sensation or pain during urination (dysuria)
- Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
- Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
- Blood in the urine (hematuria)
- Pelvic discomfort or pressure
- Mild fever or chills
- Fatigue
- In older adults, mental confusion may sometimes be the only symptom
Upper UTI Symptoms (Pyelonephritis):
- High fever (often above 100.4°F or 38°C)
- Pain or tenderness in the upper back or sides (flank pain)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Chills and shaking
- Fatigue and weakness
- Mental confusion or delirium (especially in older adults)
It's important to note that not everyone with a UTI will experience all of these symptoms, and the severity of symptoms can vary. Additionally, some individuals, particularly older adults or those with weakened immune systems, may not exhibit typical UTI symptoms. If you suspect you have a UTI or experience any of these symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention promptly for proper diagnosis and treatment.
